The test captain, Shubman Gill, has been released from the India squad for the second test against South Africa, which is set to begin on November 22.
The skipper suffered a neck injury on day 02 in the first test of the South Africa tour of India 2025 and was taken to the hospital for examination after the day’s play.
He was kept under observation and was discharged the next day. He travelled to Guwahati on Wednesday but didn’t train.
However, the BCCI has confirmed that Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the final match of the test series. “He will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury.”
Shubman Gill faced only three balls in India’s first innings before he retired hurt in the match, where India lost by 30 runs.
The wk-batter Rishabh Pant will be leading India in the second test in the absence of Shubman Gill.
It will be a must-win game for India to avoid a second series defeat on home soil in 12 months. Last year, India lost to New Zealand 0-3, which was the first test series defeat at home since 2012.
Shubman Gill’s return home has raised doubts over his participation in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. With the ODI series set to begin on November 30, the recovery appears too tight, which is highly impossible.
As per some reports, the doctors have advised another 5-7 days of rest to Gill, which puts him in a tight race to be fit for the ODI series opener.
The BCCI medical team is monitoring his progress, but selectors are already considering alternative options. With India’s ODI captain Shreyas Iyer also battling injury concerns, the selection committee is in a tough spot of bother over the selection of a captain if Shubman Gill gets ruled out of the series.
India will be aiming for a win in the second test, which is set to begin on November 22 at Barsapara Stadium, Guwahati.
