In the 49th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) unfolded into an exhilarating encounter. Punjab eventually registered a victory and continued their domination over CSK as they remain unbeaten against the Yellow Army since 2021.
The Super Kings commenced their innings with a blend of steady batting and occasional bursts of aggression. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad showcased remarkable resilience, scoring a commendable 62 runs off 48 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. Opener Ajinkya Rahane provided a solid foundation with 29 runs off 24 deliveries.
However, their momentum was curtailed by disciplined bowling performances from Punjab’s bowlers, restricting them to a total of 162/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Rahul Chahar bagged a couple of wickets while conceding 16 runs in 4 overs. Similarly, Harpreet Brar picked up two wickets each for 17 runs.
In pursuit of 163 runs for victory, Punjab’s batters displayed exceptional prowess and determination. Jonny Bairstow spearheaded the chase with a blistering knock of 46 runs off 30 balls, complemented by Rilee Rossouw‘s aggressive innings of 43 runs off 23 deliveries.
Shashank Singh and Sam Curran also contributed significantly with scores of 25 and 26 runs respectively. Despite the early dismissal of Prabhsimran Singh, Punjab Kings exhibited remarkable composure, securing victory with 7 wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare.
The Super Kings’ bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught from Punjab’s batters. While Shardul Thakur and Richard Gleeson managed to pick up a wicket each, the bowling unit faced a formidable challenge against PBKS aggressive batting lineup.
