Pacer Harshit Rana says he pays no attention to criticism or outside noise, including allegations of favoritism by India head coach Gautam Gambhir, believing that doing so would prevent him from playing freely.

The 23-year-old made his India debut across formats during Gambhir’s tenure, starting with the Perth Test on last year’s Australia tour. While his performances have been modest, Rana has consistently received backing from the head coach.

“If I start listening to all these things, put them in my mind, and take the field, I won’t be able to play cricket,” Rana said when asked about criticism, including from fans on social media.

“I just focus on what I have to do on the ground. I don’t care about what is happening outside or what someone is saying about me. I focus on my hard work and what I am going to do on the field.”

Rana played a key role in India’s first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, returning figures of 3/65 despite struggling for control in the later stages of the chase.

The right-arm pacer is working closely with India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel and senior pacer Arshdeep Singh to sharpen his skills with the new ball.

“I practice a lot with Morne and keep talking to Arshdeep. He has a lot of experience and helps guide me during practice,” Rana said.

Speaking about the one-ball rule post the 34th over, Rana explained that the team carefully monitors which ball is getting older to maximize assistance for the bowlers. “Bowlers don’t get much help in today’s cricket, so this rule is very useful. Everyone is involved in deciding which ball to use,” he said.

Rana also acknowledged the impact of superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on his development.

“It’s a big deal for me and for the team. Having such experienced players on the field and in the dressing room creates a very positive environment. Even in the dressing room, it’s a happy atmosphere for everyone,” he said.
