Australia's cricket team is currently playing the Ashes Test series against England at home. Amidst this series, a star player of Australian cricket has taken a shocking decision. Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has taken a big decision and announced his retirement from red-ball cricket at the state level. Due to which he will no longer be seen playing in the Sheffield Shield tournament for Western Australia. This decision is creating uncertainty about Marsh's Test cricket future, especially in view of the Ashes series, in which he was expected to get a chance.
Marsh did not perform well in the recent matches played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), after which he informed his teammates about his decision. Since 2019, he has played only nine matches at the state level, due to the BG International schedule. Marsh, who made his debut for Western Australia in 2009, said that he now wants to stay away from red ball cricket, but has not completely closed the door of playing Test matches for the national team.
According to reports, Marsh made it clear that if the selectors call him, he is ready to participate in the Ashes series, even if it is unusual due to the distance from the Shield matches.
However, he admitted that playing another Test match in the future seems difficult. Earlier, Australia's Chief Selector George Bailey had said in November that Marsh's game could bring new energy to the Ashes. He stressed that this option is not being adopted in the beginning of the series, but later changes are possible as per the situation.Marsh's Test career started in 2014, in which he has played 46 matches.
During this period he scored 2083 runs and also took 51 wickets. Australia played its last Test match against India last year. Apart from this, he is also the captain of Australia's T20 team, under whose captaincy the team has to play T20 World Cup 2026 next year.
