Arjuna Ranatunga to be arrested: Captain Arjun Ranatunga, who won the 1996 Cricket World Cup for Sri Lanka, is certain to go to jail on corruption charges. These corruption cases related to Ranatunga are from the time when he was the Minister of Petroleum Industry in the Government of Sri Lanka. Apart from Arjun Ranatunga, his elder brother Dammika has also been found guilty in this charge. Dammika was then the Chairman of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. On December 15, the police arrested Ranatunga's elder brother Dammika and sent him behind bars on corruption charges.

The magistrate has imposed a travel ban on Arjun Ranatunga's brother Dammika for the time being. Meaning they cannot go anywhere without the court's order. Dammika holds dual citizenship of Sri Lanka and the United States. Now the next hearing in this case will be on 13 March 2026.
The Corruption Investigation Commission said that 63-year-old Dammika was arrested in 2017 for unfair tender process in the purchase of crude oil for the government body Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.
The Corruption Investigation Commission said that CPC had suffered a loss of 800 million Sri Lankan rupees due to Dammika's undue influence.The Corruption Commission investigating the case told the magistrate in Colombo that Dammika's younger brother Arjun Ranatunga is the second accused in the case and he is currently out of the country. In such a situation, he will be arrested only upon his return.
New government intensifies investigation against corruption
The ongoing case against Arjun Ranatunga and his brother is the result of the investigation process of the current government of the country.
A new government has been formed in Sri Lanka in 2024 under the chairmanship of Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This government has promised the people of the country to end corruption.Before this, Arjun Ranatunga's brother Prasanna has also been arrested in the insurance fraud case. He has also been the former Tourism Minister of Sri Lanka. The case related to Prasanna is of the year 2022.

Talking about the cricket achievements of 62 year old Arjun Ranatunga, he has been the most successful captain of his country.
His biggest achievement was winning the 1996 World Cup. He played 93 Tests and 293 ODIs for Sri Lanka, scoring more than 10,000 runs. It was under the captaincy of Ranatunga that Sri Lanka also achieved the feat of winning the Test series in England for the first time.
