Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) kept their hopes alive for a spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs by securing a 4-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) on Saturday. After restricting Gujarat to a mere 147 runs, RCB successfully chased down the target in just 13.4 overs.
RCB’s pursuit was spearheaded by captain Faf du Plessis and former skipper Virat Kohliwho launched an aggressive assault on GT’s bowlers right from the outset. The pair dominated the powerplay, amassing an impressive 92 runs, setting a new record for RCB’s highest powerplay score in the league’s history.
However, what initially appeared to be a straightforward chase turned tense for RCB fans as the team’s middle order collapsed rapidly. The dismissal of Du Plessis, who contributed a blistering 64 off just 23 balls, triggered a downward spiral, leaving RCB struggling at 117/6 by the 11th over.
The climax of the match came with Kohli’s dismissal, scoring 42 runs off 27 balls, which included 2 fours and 4 sixes. The star batsman fell victim to Noor Ahmed‘s delivery, attempting to guide the ball into the covers but only managing to edge it behind to Wriddhiman Saha. Anushka Sharma’s visible disappointment was evident as she was captured biting her fingers in disbelief at her husband’s dismissal. Alongside her, Indian women cricketers Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues were also present, sharing the sentiment of disappointment with the fans.
