IPL 2024 has been a low-key in terms of controversies. There was a major dispute between Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar. Kohli responded to his critics who slammed him for his strike rate. But he got a befitting reply from Suni Gavaskar. The legendary batter never holds back when speaking his mind, even if it’s directed at the most powerful person, Kohli.
With a pointed critique of Kohli’s remarks, Gavaskar said, “Why bothered by ‘outside noise’ if you claim it never affects you?”‘ before concluding that the pundits had a right to criticise on what they see. The line was drawn, if not exactly between Kohli and Gavaskar, then at least on social media, as Kohli’s massive following got united to criticize the first true batting GOAT of Indian cricket.
The Gavaskar vs. Kohli controversy hasn’t drawn many responses, but former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram offered his thoughts on the subject. After much discussion over the points of dispute between the other two, Akram took Gavaskar’s side in this issue, claiming that Kohli should have held back from making his remarks because, at the end of the day, commentators like Gavaskar are there to carry out their assigned duties.
“They are legends of the sport. I know Sunny bhai both as a cricketer and as a person off the pitch. He’s certainly been a commentator for a really long time. And now for the great man himself, Virat Kohli is a modern-day legend and a top player. Considering the kind of performances he has given, he is truly one of history’s greatest ever. But I think Virat shouldn’t have said it,” remarked Akram.
Akram promises that their relationship won’t be affected by their perspectives and that they will both eventually move past this chapter.
“That’s what commentators are for. If he played a couple of slow innings and Gavaskar gave his opinion, forget about it. That is not the type of person Virat is. Both are greats and proud Indians. It’s alright, it’ll settle down very soon. Don’t believe that any of them will be offended. I know they will be alright. I’m telling you right now. I’m well familiar with both of them,” Akram added.
