Experienced all-rounder Andre Russell has shared his impressions of the ongoing SA20 2025-26, hailing the atmosphere and competitiveness around the tournament, and its growing stature alongside the world’s leading franchise-based T20 league — the Indian Premier League, where the cricketer had been a part of Kolkata Knight Riders since more than a decade.
Russell, a seasoned campaigner who is featuring in the SA20 league, has been a key addition to the Pretoria Capitals squad. His presence has further strengthened the team’s middle order as the Capitals look to peak at a crucial stage of the tournament.
Speaking about his maiden experience in South Africa’s flagship T20 league, Russell compared the energy in the stands to that of the IPL, highlighting the unwavering support from fans across venues. The explosive all-rounder stressed the importance of fan engagement in motivating players, noting how crowd support directly influences on-field performances.
“SA20 is right up there, to be honest. It’s my first time here in South Africa, and I’m really enjoying it. The atmosphere is the same as the IPL. The fans love it. Whether it’s sun or rain, they’re always out there.
I think that’s the kind of support we, as players, want. They come out and cheer for the team. When you have fans behind you, it motivates you to bowl well and bat well. At the end of the day, we’re enjoying ourselves and the atmosphere too. So I’d say this league is definitely right at the top,” Russell told SA20.
Russell also reflected on the impact West Indies players have had on T20 cricket globally, attributing it to their expressive and fearless style of play. He underlined the importance of young South African cricketers carrying that momentum forward as the format continues to evolve.
“I think it’s just the way we play. We express ourselves. As everyone says, we bring power and energy to T20 cricket. I’m happy that we have that kind of impact on T20 leagues. But at the same time, it’s important for the youngsters to keep this trend going. There are some great players coming through in South Africa, and the youngsters here are very good. Cricket is evolving, and it’s only going to get better from here,” Russell concluded.
