The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 witnessed an unusual incident during the match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday. While on-field disagreements with umpires are not uncommon, the match saw DC co-owner Parth Jindal intervene from the stands regarding a contentious decision that went in his team’s favour.
The controversy erupted in the 16th over of RR’s chase. Sanju Samsonthe RR skipper, smashed a powerful shot off Mukesh Kumar that nearly cleared the boundary. Shai Hopethe DC overseas star, dived spectacularly to his left and claimed the catch while seemingly in play. Replays showed Hope was close to the boundary cushions, but the third umpire ruled him not to have touched them, upholding the on-field call of out.
While Samson expressed his disapproval, reluctantly heading back to the pavilion, Jindal was seen shouting “Out hai, Out hai” (he’s out) from the stands. This outburst drew swift criticism on social media, with many users slamming Jindal for his unsportsmanlike conduct and attempting to influence the on-field proceedings.
Amidst the controversy, DC emerged victorious, defending their score of 221/8 (powered by half-centuries from Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel) against RR’s 201/8 (with a valiant knock of 86 from Sanju Samson). They secured a 20-run win.
