Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah said that BCCI will soon publish the advertisement for the new coach. At present, Rahul Dravid is the head coach of the Indian team. He is working on this post since November 2021. Dravid's contract as head coach of Team India is going to expire in June. Despite his contract being extended after the 2023 ODI World Cup, it seems unlikely that Rahul's tenure will be extended as the board prepares to look for new coaching talent.

Now in such a situation the question arises whether Rahul Dravid will be given another chance or BCCI will bring a new coach for Virat-Rohit. In this context, Jay Shah said, “Rahul's tenure is only till June, so if he wants to apply, he can do so.”

According to the Cricbuzz report, the appointment of other members of the coaching staff, such as batting, bowling and fielding coaches, will be decided after discussions with the new coach. Furthermore, the BCCI Secretary did not rule out the possibility of a foreign coach and kept the matter open. Shah further said, “We cannot decide whether the new coach will be an Indian or a foreigner. It will depend on the Cricket Advisory Committee and we will advertise for the post of coach as per the rules.”

For your information, let us tell you that at present many teams are not dependent on just one coach, but are appointing multiple coaches as per the format. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Cricket South Africa (CSA) and even the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have appointed different coaches for white- and red-ball cricket. Will BCCI also follow the same formula now?

The BCCI official said, “We are unlikely to consider different coaches for different formats. That decision will also be taken by the Cricket Advisory Committee. There are many all-format players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant. Moreover, such a situation is unprecedented in India.”

New coach will be appointed for a long time – Jai Shah

Jay confirmed that the new coach will be appointed on a long-term contract and will serve for an initial period of three years. In other words, BCCI wants to appoint a coach keeping in mind the 2027 ODI World Cup.
