The five-time IPL champions Mumbai are having a disappointing campaign in IPL 2024. The team has been embroiled in controversy months before the season began when Hardik Pandya was named the team’s new captain replacing Rohit Sharma. Upset with captaincy switch, fans targeted Pandya for the first few games in IPL 2024. Hardik was also greeted with boos at away venues as well as MI faced backlash from the fans who felt that Rohit was unfairly sacked as the captain.
MI failed to deliver as a team and became the first franchise to get eliminated from the playoff race. But this is not the end to MI’s story in IPL 2024. A video of Rohit Sharma and KKR’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar went viral before MI’s game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. In the clip, Sharma talks about his dissatisfaction with how things have panned out at the Mumbai Indians over the last few months.
Although Rohit did not specifically mention his franchise, it appeared from his statements that he was referring to MI. “Ek ek cheez change ho raha hai, sab unke upar hai, me dhyaan nahi deta,”(Everything is changing one by one, it depends on them, I don’t care about that).
“Whatever it is, it is my home. I have built a temple. (That's my home, whatever it may be. It's a temple that I've created).” Supporters also stated that they overheard Rohit say Bhai mera kya, mera toh last hai (Anyway, this is my last).
According to a source earlier this week, several senior MI players—Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav, among others—spoke during a team meeting about the reasons behind the franchise’s terrible performances in the ongoing season.
Additionally, a select group of players were invited to have one-on-one meetings with MI’s management to talk about the team’s plan for the future seasons.
MI will play for dignity when they take on the high-flying Knight Riders in Kolkata, as the team is already eliminated from the playoff race. If KKR win on Saturday, they will officially qualify for the next round.
