IND vs NZ: If India-New Zealand final match is cancelled, then who will become the champion? This is the rule of ICC

IND vs NZ Final, T20 World Cup 2026: The final match of T20 World Cup 2026 is to be held between India and New Zealand on March 8 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This match is going to be very exciting for cricket fans. Both the teams are coming with amazing performance in the semi-finals.

But a big question is that if the match is canceled due to rain then who will get the title? Will India or New Zealand become champion? Let us tell you that ICC has made special rules for this situation.

If the match is cancelled, who will become the champion?

This is a final match, so ICC would like to get the result of this match at any cost. Due to which ICC has kept a reserve for this match. If the match cannot start or remains incomplete due to rain on the match day, then the match will be played on the reserve day the next day (9 March).

If the match has started on March 8 but is stopped due to rain, it will continue on March 9 from the exact position from where it was stopped. That means it will not be played from the beginning. For the final, 120 minutes extra time is given on both the days. Every effort will be made to complete the match even after reducing the overs. To get the result of the match, both the teams need to play at least 10 overs.

But what if play is not possible on both the days? If no play is possible or the match is not completed on March 8 and 9, then as per ICC rules both the teams will be declared joint winners.

That means India and New Zealand will be joint champions of the tournament. This situation is rarely seen in the history of cricket. However, this has happened once with Team India. The 2003 Champions Trophy was shared by Team India with Sri Lanka. Then the match could not be completed due to rain.

India eyes second consecutive title

India is trying to win its second consecutive title as the defending champion. In the history of T20 World Cup, no team has been able to win the title twice in a row. But the Indian team is just 1 win away from this feat. However, it faces New Zealand, which is playing for its first T20 World Cup trophy.

Apart from this, India has never defeated New Zealand in the T20 World Cup.
