The Indian Premier League became just the second competition in T20 history to scale 100 centuries. The record was made when Gujarat Titans duo Shubman Gill and Sam Sudharsan hit tons in Match 59 of the IPL 2024 season against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad on Friday. As per ESPNcricinfoIPL now owns 101 centuries, with Gill hitting the 100th. England’s Twenty20 Cup is the only competition to witness more hundreds.
Gill and Sudharsan went in equal sync against CSK. GT skipper Gill smashed 104 from 55 balls. His knock was laced with nine fours and six sixes. On the other hand, his opening partner got to his hundred with a six. Sudharsan hit 103 from 51 balls. His knock consisted of five fours and seven sixes. GT smashed a record 231/3 – their second-highest score in the IPL. This was also the third instance in which two batters of the same team hit centuries in an IPL game. Gill and Sudharsan helped GT register their second-highest IPL total. They also posted a record opening stand of 210.
CSK went on to lose the match by 35 runs after scoring 196/8 in 20 overs. For GT, Mohit Sharma claimed a three-wicket haul. Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali managed the fifties for the Yellow Army.

Twenty20 Cup (157 centuries)
As per ESPNcricinfoEngland’s Twenty20 Cup has witnessed a total of 157 centuries get registered from a total of 2184 matches. The tournament started in 2003 as Ian Harvey became the maiden centurion, hitting 100* for Gloucestershire against Warwickshire in Birmingham. Thomas Wood was the last centurion. He hit 110* for Derbyshire against Leicestershire in June 2023. Michael Klinger owns the most hundreds (7). He played for Gloucestershire. Luke Wright and James Vince are next with 5 centuries each. Adam Lyth has the highest score in the tournament. He scored 161 for Yorkshire against Northants in 2017.
Indian Premier League (101 centuries)
The IPL in India has joined the bandwagon of 100-plus tons. Starting in 2008, the IPL set the benchmark for franchise-based cricket. Brendon McCullum hit IPL’s maiden century in the opening clash in 2008. He did so for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Gill and Sudharsan are the latest entrants in 2024. Notably, the IPL 2024 season has witnessed a record 14 centuries – most in a single edition. IPL 2022 had 12 tons – first season with 10-plus centuries. Notably, IPL’s leading scorer, Virat Kohli, owns the most centuries (8). Jos Buttler follows suit with seven tons. Chris Gayle (6 tons) holds the record for the highest individual score (175*). Kohli and Buttler have the record for most tons in a season (4 each).
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (72 centuries)
India’s premier domestic T20 trophy – Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy – has witnessed a total of 72 centuries hit from a total of 1519 matches to date. Mumbai’s Rohit Sharma hit his maiden century in SMAT back in 2007. He hit 101 from 45 balls against Gujarat. Anmolpreet Singh was the latest centurion, hitting 113 for Punjab against Baroda in the 2023 edition. Four players have three centuries each in the tournament. Unmukt Chand, Rituraj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma hold this record. Shreyas Iyer of Mumbai has the highest individual score of 147 from 55 balls against Sikkim in the 2019 edition. As many as 13 centuries were smashed in the 2023 edition of SMAT. The record is 16 tons in 2019.
National T20 Cup (42 centuries)
Pakistan’s domestic T20 tournament – the National T20 Cup – is next on this list. The National T20 Cup has witnessed a total of 41 tons being hammered. A total of 662 matches have been played in this tournament. The tournament was established in 2005. The 2023 edition witnessed four centuries by four different players.
Big Bash League (37 centuries)
The Big Bash League in Australia has witnessed 37 centuries to date from 593 matches. Started in the 2011-12 season, the BBL has gained large popularity with quality cricket from seasoned stars across the globe. David Warner hit the competition’s maiden century in 2011 for Sydney Thunder. He scored 102 from 51 balls against Melbourne Stars. Josh Brown was the latest centurion, hitting 140 from 57 balls for the Brisbane Heat against Adelaide Strikers. Ben McDermott owns the most centuries in BBL history (3). Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell holds the record for the highest individual score in the BBL. He smashed 154* from 64 balls against the Hobart Hurricanes. Meanwhile, Brown’s 12 sixes in his knock of 140 is a tournament record.
Bangladesh Premier League (32 centuries)
The Bangladesh Premier League is next with 32 centuries from 419 matches. The tournament came into existence in 2012. The tourney wasn’t held in 2014 due to a political crisis in the nation. 2020 and 2021 saw the tourney get cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Chris Gayle hit the tournament’s first two centuries back in 2012 for Barisal Burners. Tanzid Hasan was the latest centurion in BPL 2024. He smashed a valiant 116-run knock for Chattogram Challengers against Khulna Tigers. Gayle owns the most centuries in BPL (5). Among Bangladesh players, Tamim Iqbal has two tons. Gayle’s 146* versus Dhaka Dynamites in BPL 2017 remains the best score in the tournament’s history.
