Kolkata Knight Riders have already encountered a string of challenges in the 19th edition of Indian Premier League, and their woes continue to mount. The team has suffered yet another big blow as one more fast bowler has been ruled out of the tournament.
This development comes at a particularly crucial time, just before KKR’s second match of IPL 2026, further weakening their pace attack and raising concerns about the team’s overall balance.
Among the biggest losses is Matheesha Pathirana, who has failed the mandatory fitness test conducted under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Reports from various media outlets confirm that Pathirana did not meet the required fitness standards, resulting in his exclusion from the entire IPL season.🚨 Matheesha Pathirana has failed his fitness test and will miss the entire IPL 2026 season. pic.twitter.com/YkN8E5TURF

KKR had been hoping that Pathirana might still be able to join the team midway through the season if he passed the fitness assessment.
This possibility raised optimism among the team management and fans alike, as his presence would have added depth to an already depleted bowling line-up. Unfortunately, with him failing the fitness test, these hopes have been dashed, leaving KKR to rethink their pace options for the season.
This latest setback comes on the heels of previous losses to KKR’s fast-bowling unit. Before start of IPL 2026, two of the team’s pace bowlers - Harshit Rana and Akash Deep - were already ruled out due to injuries or other reasons.
Also, the team had to part ways with veteran Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman following political protests in Bangladesh regarding alleged atrocities against Hindus. The decision to exclude him was made jointly by KKR and Board of Control for Cricket in India, and it had wider implications, even affecting Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
To fill the void left by Mustafizur Rahman, KKR brought in Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani, while Navdeep Saini was included in place of Harshit Rana.
However, no replacement has been named for Akash Deep. With Pathirana now ruled out, the team faces a critical challenge in identifying another bowler capable of reinforcing their pace attack. This series of setbacks has left KKR’s bowling lineup severely weakened, putting extra pressure on the remaining bowlers to deliver consistently.
