Chennai Super Kings, set to play its first home game against Punjab Kings at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, will in all likelihood be without its talisman Mahendra Singh Dhoni after the wicketkeeper-batter picked up an injury during a practice session one week ago.

“MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026,” CSK said, issuing an official statement last Saturday.

Dhoni, who has led CSK to five IPL titles to become the most successful captain in the league. Currently undergoing rehabilitation in Chennai, Dhoni did have a hit in the nets on the eve of the Punjab fixture.

The 45-year-old athlete padded up and engaged in throwdowns for approximately thirty minutes alongside Urvil Patel. Initially his shot-making did appear to be a bit patchy, but he quickly regained his form, executing several powerful shots that sent the ball soaring into the stands several rows back.

When skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was asked about Dhoni’s potential return date during the pre-match press conference, he said he would be able to answer “just when the 13th day is done.”
