There have been a lot of rumours about a leadership crisis in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after some social media exchanges between a few players of the squad.
The franchise, after losing two consecutive matches at the beginning of the IPL 2026 season, is not only under scrutiny for its poor on-field performance but also for the alleged internal discord. The issue of captain Ajinkya Rahane has been discussed widely after bowler Vaibhav Arora was seen as liking a post that hinted at a change of captain.Even though the team is still trying to get a combination without the two players who are injured, Harshit Rana and Matheesha Pathirana, the revelations of a rift in the dressing room have led to speculations about the harmony of the two-time champions.
The rumours of a “crack up” inside the Kolkata Knight Riders camp were fueled by the social media activity of 28-year-old pacer Vaibhav Arora. On April 3, popular cricket journalist Rohit Juglan shared a video analysing KKR’s failures and explicitly suggesting that Ajinkya Rahane should step down as captain to help the team script a comeback.
In a move that many fans interpreted as a “secret revolt”, Arora was found liking the reel. You Might Be Interested In
Given that Arora has been a mainstay in the team since 2023 and previously played under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, his public nod to a video calling for his current captain’s removal has hinted at a troubled atmosphere within the KKR dressing room.
The video in question which has garnered massive views within hours, provided a tactical breakdown of why the current KKR puzzle “does not add up.” Juglan pointed out that Rahane’s struggling strike rate in the powerplays and Varun Chakaravarthy’s inconsistent bowling have left the team vulnerable.
He argued that Rahane was seemingly a “third choice” for the captaincy and suggested that a move similar to those made by the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals in the past—where senior leaders stepped aside for fresh blood—might be necessary. The mention of Rinku Singh as a potential leadership fit further polarised the fanbase.
While the digital “paper trail” left by Vaibhav Arora indicates significant dissatisfaction, the term “massive revolt” remains a hyperbolic description of the current situation. There has been no official statement from the KKR management regarding a change in captaincy or any disciplinary action against Arora.
However, in the high-pressure environment of the IPL, social media likes are rarely accidental. Unless the Kolkata Knight Riders manage a convincing win in their next fixture, the pressure on Ajinkya Rahane to step down will likely transition from social media speculation to a boardroom reality.
