New Delhi: India’s star performers Sanju Samson and Jasprit Bumrah headline the shortlist for the ICC Player of the Month award for March, following their pivotal roles in India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign.
Joining the Indian duo is South Africa’s emerging talent Connor Esterhuizen, who impressed with a stellar debut T20I series in New Zealand.
March proved to be a defining month for Sanju Samson. After missing the early stages of the tournament, he made a dramatic impact when it mattered most.
His unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in a must-win match in Kolkata turned the tide in India’s favour and kick-started their knockout momentum.
He followed it up with two commanding knocks of 89 each in the semi-final against England in Mumbai and the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. His fearless strokeplay and consistency under pressure were instrumental in guiding India to the title, earning him the Player of the Tournament award.
Jasprit Bumrah once again showcased his prowess in high-pressure situations, delivering match-winning performances with the ball.
Across the crucial knockout stages, he picked up seven wickets at an impressive average of 12.00 while maintaining an economy rate of 7.00.
His standout performance came in the final, where he dismantled New Zealand’s batting line-up with figures of 4 for 15 in four overs, sealing the victory for India and earning the Player of the Match honour.
While the spotlight was largely on the World Cup, Connor Esterhuizen made a strong case for himself with an outstanding debut T20I series in New Zealand.
The young South African scored 200 runs in five matches at an average of 50 and an impressive strike rate of 145.98, playing a key role in South Africa’s 3-2 series win.
His performances also saw him climb rapidly in the ICC T20I batting rankings, reaching 551 rating points and breaking into the top 40 early in his international career.
With three standout performers delivering exceptional performances in different contexts, the race for the ICC Player of the Month award promises to be closely contested.
While Samson and Bumrah have the advantage of World Cup-winning contributions, Esterhuizen’s breakthrough performances add an exciting dimension to the contest. The final decision will reflect not just individual brilliance, but impact on the biggest stages.
