Cameron Green has not bowled a single ball in IPL 2026 and it has cost Kolkata Knight Riders in ways that go well beyond just the overs he has not contributed.

A side already ravaged by injuries has been operating without one of the most valuable all-rounders in the competition, and the ripple effects of that absence have been visible in both results and team balance through the opening phase of their campaign. That is about to change as Cameron Green’s bowling return is close.

Why Cameron Green has not bowled and what Cricket Australia said

As per ESPNcricinfo, Green is expected to bowl in Thursday’s match against Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens the first time he will contribute with the ball in a competitive situation this season.

The explanation came from Cricket Australia before the tournament began. “Cameron has a lower-back injury, which is being managed, but requires him to abstain from bowling for a short period,” CA said on March 30.

“Cameron is currently rebuilding his bowling loads in India with a view to return in around 10-12 days’ time.” That window has now passed and with KKR playing their fourth fixture of the season the timing of his return to bowling could not be more critical for a side that is sitting at the bottom of the table with one point from three matches.

The context that makes his return so significant

The injury situation at KKR this season has been genuinely difficult to manage. Mustafizur Rahman was removed from the squad on BCCI instructions before the tournament started. Harshit Rana and Akash Deep were both ruled out with injuries shortly before the season kicked off. Sunil Narine missed the Punjab Kings game through illness.

Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out with a hand injury sustained taking a catch in the previous match. Green not bowling through all of this has left Ajinkya Rahane with a significantly depleted attack and has fundamentally changed how KKR can approach their bowling in any given innings.

The batting form for KKR that has added to the concern

Cameron Green’s contributions with the bat have not compensated for his bowling absence either. He has scored 18, 2 and 4 across his three innings, numbers that do not justify the INR 25.20 crore KKR spent at auction, the highest price ever paid for an overseas player at an IPL auction.

Aaron Finch has noticed the change in how Green is carrying himself at the crease. “Remember when he was at the top of the order for MI, how he had a totally different intent. He was imposing at the crease. Now he looks tentative,”

Finch said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut. “Don’t push him down. Push him either up the order, or give him a rest.” Green has batted at three times and four once. The question of where he fits in this lineup and how to get the best from him, as both batter and bowler, is the most pressing tactical question Rahane needs to answer on Thursday night.
