Ayush Mhatre, CSK vs DC: 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre, who scored a fifty against Delhi Capitals, returned to the pavilion without getting out. What is the reason behind this?
CSK vs DC, Ayush Mhatre: The 18th match of IPL 2026 is being played between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals at Chepauk Stadium, Chennai. Chennai Super Kings, batting first, scored 212 runs at the loss of 2 wickets in 20 overs.
During this time, an incident was seen in the match which left all the fans shocked. 18 year old Ayush Mhatre, who scored a fifty against Delhi Capitals, returned to the pavilion without getting out. What is the reason behind this?
Sanju Samson’s first century for CSK
Sanju Samson is seen playing in yellow jersey for the first time in IPL 2026. Samson scored an unbeaten century against Delhi Capitals. Samson played a brilliant inning of 115 not out off 56 balls. During this, he hit 15 fours and 4 sixes. This was Samson’s first century for Chennai Super Kings and fourth overall in IPL. With this, Sanju Samson became the first centurion to score a century in IPL 2026.
Ayush Mhatre-Samson’s century partnership
When Sanju Samson was nearing his century, he started stealing single runs. But during this period the total score of Chennai Super Kings was much less than 200. After three consecutive defeats, it became very important for CSK to set a target above 200. Mhatre along with Sanju Samson made a partnership of 113 runs for the second wicket. This has become the second highest partnership for any wicket for CSK against Delhi Capitals in the history of IPL.
CSK were in a strong position going into the last over but Lungi Ngidi’s tight bowling in the 17th over put Chennai in some trouble. When Natarajan bowled accurate yorkers in the 18th over, it became a bit difficult for Ayush Mhatre and Samson to bat.
Ayush Mhatre returned to the pavilion without getting out
At the same time, CSK decided to ‘retire out’ Mhatre and send Shivam Dubey to bat in his place. This decision was taken so that a new batsman could be fielded who could score fast runs in the last overs. After this Ayush Mhatre retired and returned to the pavilion. At that time Ayush was playing after scoring 59 runs on 36 balls.
Shivam Dubey’s stormy innings
Shivam Dubey started playing his role as soon as he entered the field. Dubey scored 20 runs on 10 balls unbeaten. During this he hit 2 fours and 1 six. With this, he played an important role in helping CSK cross the 200-run mark. CSK has set a target of 212 runs on the scoreboard at the loss of 2 wickets in 20 overs.
This feat happened for the second time in CSK
Ayush Mhatre has now joined the list of those few IPL players who were ‘retired out’ in the middle of the innings. This list includes players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Atharva Tayde, Sai Sudarshan, Tilak Verma and Devon Conway. Conway was the first CSK batsman to be ‘retired out’; In this sense, Mhatre has become the second player of Chennai Super Kings who was called out in this manner despite scoring a half-century.
