The Rohit Sharma injury has troubled Mumbai Indians camp at the worst possible time. During MI’s steep chase of 241 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium on 12 April, Rohit Sharma retired hurt in the sixth over after scoring 19 off 13 deliveries, visibly struggling with his right hamstring. The team physio strapped his leg heavily to try and keep him out there, but Rohit clearly couldn’t go on and never came back out to bat.
Early signs suggest the issue might just be a minor strain rather than a bad tear, though the franchise hasn’t put out an official statement yet, and scans will show the full extent of the damage. Whether he plays in Mumbai’s next game against Punjab Kings on 16 April is still up in the air, leaving the five-time champions, who are sitting eighth with just one win from four, with a massive selection headache at the top.
The simplest move MI can make is to send out their two most seasoned white-ball openers together.
Putting Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock at the top makes a lot of sense on paper. Rickelton had a breakout IPL 2025 season, racking up 388 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 150.97, proving he’s one of the most explosive powerplay hitters around. De Kock, on the other hand, has years of T20 experience and reads pace bowling better than almost anyone. This Rohit Sharma injury means pairing these two left-handers gives MI an aggressive, solid opening stand that can attack both pace and spin right away. This is huge at the Wankhede, where powerplay runs usually decide the game.
The downside is that MI would have to burn an overseas slot here, which limits their options in the bowling attack or the lower order, which is a trade-off the team will have to think about.Former MI pacer Zaheer Khan suggested that Suryakumar Yadav could move up to open if the Rohit Sharma injury keeps him out for a game or two. This idea actually has some tactical weight behind it. SKY has opened for India in T20Is before, and his 360-degree hitting makes him a nightmare to bowl to when the field is up.
With Rickelton playing his natural aggressive game at one end and Suryakumar hunting for anything full or short, MI would have two massive threats from ball one. While this move takes Suryakumar away from his best spot at number three and might mess with the middle-order flow, Hardik Pandya might feel that a three-match losing streak calls for bold moves rather than safe ones.

Zaheer also brought up Naman Dhir as a solid choice to partner Rickelton if the Rohit Sharma injury is a long-term problem.
The management might have to shuffle the whole deck and promote Dhir if those scans show more than just a bit of tightness. Dhir has serious power through the offside and has shown over the last couple of seasons that he can handle the big moments.More importantly, moving him to the top keeps all the overseas spots open for the rest of the team, giving them more flexibility with their bowlers. It’s the riskiest play, but it lets Suryakumar and Tilak Varma stay in their natural roles, which might actually be the better long-term fix. Everyone is waiting for the next Rohit Sharma injury update before Thursday’s big game.
