Kolkata Knight Riders are currently waiting for the return of their premier spinner Varun Chakravarthy as the three-time champions prepare for a high-profile clash against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Tuesday, April 14.
Varun, who picked up a finger injury during the KKR vs SRH clash, has not featured in the last two games. The team management is now closely monitoring his recovery as the big match approaches.
There is some positive news coming out of the camp ahead of the CSK clash. KKR are hopeful that Varun Chakravarthy could be available for selection, and there is a strong chance of his return, depending on the final fitness assessment before the match.
Speaking ahead of the match, a KKR spokesperson gave an update on his condition and training progress.
“Varun’s been training; he’s had a bandage on his hand, but he’s still training. He’s been training for all the days leading up to this match, so he’s good,” said the KKR spokesperson.
There are high chances that Varun Chakravarthy will be available for the CSK vs KKR clash.
Meanwhile, one of the most talked-about mystery spinners in modern T20 cricket has struggled to live up to his reputation this season. Known for his variations and control in the middle overs, he has so far been unable to make a significant impact.
In the opening match against the Mumbai Indians, he conceded 48 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. The struggles continued in the next game against SRH, where he went for 31 runs in just two overs, again without success.
KKR are already in a difficult position as the only side yet to register a win this season. Their bowling unit has been under pressure, and injuries to key pacers have made things even more challenging.
With senior fast bowlers already unavailable, the responsibility on the spin department has increased heavily. Both Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy were excellent in the last game against LSG, and are likely to play alongside Varun in a three-man spin attack against CSK today.
KKR’s likely playing XI vs CSK: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (wk), Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Ramandeep Singh, Sunil Narine, Anukul Roy (impact player), Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi, Varun Chakravarthy.
