Five matches in and KKR have not found their footing at all this season. Something feels deeply off about this side and people are starting to say it out loud now. One former Indian cricketer has put his finger on exactly what KKR’s biggest IPL mistake has been in IPL 2026.
Mohammad Kaif did not hold back when he spoke about KKR’s biggest IPL mistake this season. He pointed straight at the decision to pick Cameron Green over Andre Russell. For Kaif, that one call has cost KKR more than anything else so far.
Green came in at INR 25 crore which is an enormous amount of money for any franchise. But Green has simply not delivered what that price tag demands in IPL 2026. Meanwhile Andre Russell – one of the most destructive players in IPL history – sits in the dugout as a coach.
Kaif’s point is simple and hard to argue with honestly. Russell with a bat in hand changes games in ways Green has not shown he can. Putting him in a coaching role while the team loses feels like a waste nobody can explain properly.
KKR sit at the very bottom of the IPL 2026 points table right now. Five matches played, one point earned, and an NRR of -1.383 that tells its own painful story. The 32-run loss to CSK on April 14 was their latest disappointing result.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane looks short of answers and the body language in the field shows it. During the CSK game, players were glancing towards the dugout under pressure rather than backing themselves. That kind of disconnect between players and management is very hard to hide on a cricket field.
The bowling has been a real problem too in IPL 2026. Harshit Rana and Akash Deep are both injured and Mustafizur Rahman was snubbed entirely. Varun Chakravarthy has struggled while the pace attack leans heavily on inexperienced shoulders.
KKR face Gujarat Titans on April 17 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. GT comes into that game on the back of two straight wins and is the clear favourite. For KKR this is not just another match – it is close to a must-win situation already.
Andre Russell watching from the sidelines while KKR’s biggest IPL mistake keeps costing them is genuinely hard to watch. Cameron Green needs to step up massively or this conversation is only going to get louder. KKR has the talent on paper – right now none of it is coming together.
