The Indian Premier League(IPL) 2026 has not been ideal for Jasprit Bumrah, who is yet to pick up a wicket this season, while Mumbai Indians (MI) remain winless in their last four matches.
Following MI’s recent defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS), a video of Bumrah from their earlier clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has surfaced on social media, raising concerns among fans. In the clip, the pacer is seen expressing frustration, throwing a bowling marker, shouting towards the ground, and even kicking the turf.
In that match, RCB posted a formidable 240/6, while MI managed 222/5 in response. Bumrah had a tough outing, conceding 35 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket.
Several former cricketers and experts have weighed in on his lean patch. MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene pointed out that a lack of support from other bowlers during the powerplay has added pressure on Bumrah. He also revealed that the pacer had been dealing with a niggle at the start of the season, which may have impacted his rhythm.
"Bumrah is bowling well; it is just that we are not putting pressure on the opposition in the powerplay. They know they don't need to take too many risks against Bumrah. We have tried a few different things which he is also attempting, but the opposition is batting well. I can't point to one specific thing and say that is why he hasn't taken a wicket,” said Jayawardene as quoted by NDTV Sports.
"I think initially it was because he had a slight niggle following the World Cup. We wanted to build him up, and over the last few games, his speeds have increased. We have monitored all of that, so he is very comfortable. Sometimes, you just need a bit of luck. He bowled some really good balls early on to Shreyas Iyer but wasn't lucky enough to get the breakthrough. Once he starts taking wickets, he might be impossible to stop,” he added.
