Virat Kohli was at the peak of his career in 2016. The batting maestro was the skipper of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru) and also captained the Indian team in Test cricket. In the IPL 2016, he stacked up 973 runs at an average of 81.08 and also powered 4 centuries and 7 fifties.
In international cricket, Kohli accumulated 2595 runs in 41 innings. He also led the Men in Blue to 3 successive Test series victories that year and broke many records stamping his authority as one of the finest players in the sport.
But the only thing he could not lay his hands was a trophy. As a player Virat piled many runs, topped records but he could not grab any silverware. India cruised their way through the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2016, but they were defeated by the then champions West Indies in the semis at Wankhede Stadium.
Further, after breaking many records in the IPL, Virat led RCB to the final of the cash-rich league. They too were handed a loss by Sunrisers Hyderabad who were led by David Warner.
In his interview with Jio Cinema Virat admitted that the 2016 IPL final defeat and the Indian team’s T20 World Cup semi-final loss to the West Indies at Wankhede that same year ‘broke his heart.’
“I experienced two heartbreaks in 2016. The WT20 came first, followed by the IPL Final. I felt I could win the World T20 as we were in such a strong position, so it took me just a few days to recover,” said Kohli.
The 35-year old batter also stated that the fans were urging him to bowl in the ongoing IPL season but he denied them with an apology.
“I will never bowl in the IPL. After hearing the fans chant “Kohli ko bowling do” a few times, I joined my hands and apologized. They asked me to bowl in the match where MI scored 200 runs in 15 overs. The confidence I have when batting will also be gone,” he added.
