The incident occurred in the third over of the innings bowled by Axar Patel. With Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya stepping down, he mistimed it. The South African cricketer was running back from mid-off and misjudged the catch as it was flowing over his head. A few moments later, ambulance had to be rushed into the ground, with the medical personnel putting a neck brace.

One of the main bowlers in the Capitals’ ranks, Ngidi has taken seven wickets in the six innings he has bowled with his wily variations, especially the dipping slower ball. Nevertheless, the head injury will force the 30-year-old to play no part in the game.

As for the state of the match against the Punjab Kings, the Capitals suffered a heartbreaking defeat despite KL Rahul’s unbeaten 152 guiding them to the highest total of IPL 2026 – 264. Rahul became the first Indian batter to make a 150+ score in IPL history and shared a 220-run stand with Nitish Rana, who leathered 91 off 44 deliveries. But Punjab Kings openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh also got their side off to a rollicking start, mustering 116 in the powerplay to set the tone.

While the Capitals struck after the first strategic timeout by taking three scalps, they missed two crucial catches offered by Shreyas Iyer, who made an unbeaten 71. The run-chase of 265 remains the highest in the tournament history.
