England have announced their 15-player squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which takes place on home soil in England beginning June 12 at Edgbaston.

The headline selection is the inclusion of 18-year-old Tilly Corteen-Coleman, an uncapped left-arm spinner from Surrey who has never previously been named in a senior England squad but has earned her place on the back of performances that have been impossible to ignore.

Nat Sciver-Brunt will captain the side at her seventh T20 World Cup, with Charlie Dean named as vice-captain.

Women’s T20 World Cup: The Tilly Courteen-Coleman call-up that turns heads

Tilly Courteen-Coleman’s selection is the story of the squad announcement. The Surrey spinner has had a remarkable domestic season, 11 wickets in nine Hundred matches at an economy rate of 5.75, performances that were instrumental in Southern Brave’s run to the final, followed by ten wickets from seven innings in the domestic one-day cup.

She was the most expensive uncapped player sold in the women’s Hundred auction, bought by Southern Brave for £105,000, which tells you everything about the level of interest she had already generated before this squad was announced.

Her inclusion means England will have three left-arm spinners available during the tournament with Sophie Ecclestone and Linsey Smith also in the squad, a spin-heavy selection that reflects both the depth of England’s slow-bowling options and the conditions expected during a home summer tournament.

The experience core and first-time world cuppers

Sciver-Brunt leads a squad that combines enormous experience with exciting new faces. Danni Wyatt-Hodge will play in her eighth T20 World Cup, a number that speaks to an extraordinary career at the top of the international game.

Issy Wong, who has 17 T20I caps since her debut in 2022, makes her first World Cup squad alongside Lauren Filer, with both making history as they prepare for their debut on the biggest stage.

Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp, two seam-bowling all-rounders who have battled injuries in recent years, have both returned to full fitness at the right time, Gibson scoring back-to-back half-centuries for Somerset in the one-day cup including a boundary-fuelled 77 off 37 balls in her most recent appearance.

The notable omissions from England’s squad

Every selection brings omissions that generate debate and this squad is no different. Em Arlott, who made her England debut last year and took nine wickets in six T20Is at an average of 21.22, misses out despite a strong recent record.

Tammy Beaumont, who captained England in their most recent T20I series against India, is not included. Maia Bouchier and leg-spinner Sarah Glenn, who is recovering from a finger injury, are also absent. The selection of Corteen-Coleman over more experienced options is a clear statement about the direction England want to take their spin attack into a home tournament.

What the captain and coach said

Head coach Charlotte Edwards, who captained England to the 2009 Women’s T20 World Cup title also on home soil, described these as the hardest selection meetings she has been part of given the strength of the available pool.

Sciver-Brunt spoke about the honor of leading England at a home World Cup and pointed to the inspiration of England’s 2009 and 2017 World Cup victories as the motivation driving this group.

England will play T20I series against New Zealand and India before the tournament begins on June 12 at Edgbaston, preparation time that will be crucial for Corteen-Coleman and the other less experienced squad members to bed into the setup before the tournament proper begins.
