Ryan Rickelton’s maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) century was not enough as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) successfully chased a record target of 244 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Mumbai on Wednesday, securing their fifth consecutive victory.
Abhishek Sharma (45), Travis Head (76), Heinrich Klaasen (65), and Salil Arora (30) led a dominant batting performance, guiding SRH to the fourth-highest IPL run chase of all time with eight balls remaining. This mark is also the second-highest successful pursuit this season, following Punjab Kings’ chase of 265 against Delhi Capitals.
SRH now sit third in the standings with 12 points, behind Royal Challengers Bangalore and ahead of Rajasthan Royals on net run-rate.The chase began aggressively in the Powerplay with Head and Sharma scoring 93 runs without loss in six overs. Head struck 48 off 19 balls with five sixes while Sharma remained unbeaten on 36 off 17 balls, including three boundaries and three sixes. Their 92/0 Powerplay score ties the highest against Mumbai Indians, matching a score made by Delhi Capitals earlier this season.
The partnership punished bowlers Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, scoring 29 and 28 runs respectively, with mixed bowling tactics from MI captain Hardik Pandya failing to slow the scoring rate.
Spinner Ghazanfar and part-time pacer Will Jacks also conceded runs, with Jacks giving away 19 in his single over. After reaching 115 without loss in the seventh over, the momentum shifted in the ninth as Ghazanfar took two quick wickets, dismissing Sharma for 45 and Ishan Kishan for a duck, reducing SRH to 130/2. In the following over, Pandya removed Head, who had scored 76 from 30 balls. At halfway, SRH were 134/3, requiring 110 runs from 60 balls.
Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy then advanced the chase. Klaasen responded strongly, hitting 31 runs off 12 balls including boundaries off Ashwani Kumar. By the 12th over, SRH were 168/3 with the required run rate reduced. They continued to dominate, punishing Bumrah in the 14th over for 13 runs, and scoring 19 runs in the 16th over to pass 200 runs.
Boult provided MI with a breakthrough by dismissing Reddy for 21 in the 17th over, prompting Salil Arora to join Klaasen at the crease. The pair sealed the victory for SRH in the 19th over with eight balls to spare.
Earlier, Rickelton’s unbeaten 123 off 55 balls propelled MI to their highest IPL total at Wankhede Stadium, surpassing Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 240/4 earlier this season. The opener hit eight sixes and 10 fours.
Rickelton and Will Jacks (46 off 22 balls) put together a 78-run opening stand by the end of the Powerplay, dismantling the SRH bowling attack. Jacks was dismissed by Nitish Kumar Reddy on the first ball of the eighth over, but Rickelton kept scoring, reaching 110/1 by eight overs.
MI lost further wickets as Suryakumar Yadav scored five before being dismissed by Eshan Malinga in the ninth over.
Naman Dhir made 22, adding a 55-run partnership with Rickelton, before being dismissed by Praful Hinge in the 14th over. MI were 167/3 then.Rickelton completed his maiden IPL century off 44 balls during a 14-run 15th over, helping MI reach 181/3. He now holds the highest individual score for Mumbai Indians, surpassing Sanath Jayasuriya’s 114 not out at Wankhede in 2008, and is the fastest centurion for the franchise. He also became the second wicketkeeper to score an IPL hundred for MI after Quinton de Kock earlier this season.
Captain Hardik Pandya contributed 31 runs off 15 balls, including two fours and a six in the 16th over, putting on a 56-run partnership with Rickelton before being dismissed by Sakib Hussain near the end of the innings. MI finished with 243/5 after 20 overs, with Rickelton hitting a six and a four in the final over bowled by Praful Hinge.
