Virat Kohli has cemented his name in the sport as one of the all time greats. Topping records in international cricket as well as the IPL. Recently Kohli made a revelation on his career. According to Kohli, Suresh Raina was the one who initially suggested his name for the Indian team. Kohli did not find a spot in the national squad as an opener, but it was because of Suresh Raina he was reconsidered. Additionally, he also named the former Chief Selector Dilip Vengsarkar.
In a chat with Jio Cinema, ahead of the game against CSK, Kohli stated, “We were competing in the Emerging Cup in Australia in 2008. I can still clearly recall that at some point, Suresh Raina had learnt about me. He arrived in the middle of the competition. Raina assumed the captaincy after Badrinath, and we were coached by Praveen Amre.”
“He saw me play against New Zealand where I scored a century. Watching someone play creates an impact than hearing about somebody’s game. I opened the innings and he saw how I batted according to the situation and decided I should play for India,” he continued.
The 35-year old batter also thanked Suresh Raina for suggesting his name for the national squad,
“I am thankful to him for pushing my name to Dilip Vengsarkar sir, who was the Chief Selector back then.”
Kohli made his international debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka at the age of 18.
