Sri Lanka have named their squads for an all-format tour of the West Indies next month and the most significant piece of news from the selection panel is a captaincy change in white-ball cricket. Kusal Mendis takes over the ODI leadership from Charith Asalanka and the T20I captaincy from Dasun Shanaka, with Kamindu Mendis named as his vice-captain across both formats. Dhananjaya de Silva continues to lead the side in Tests.

Sri Lanka vs West Indies: The captaincy changes and what they mean

Asalanka retains his place in the 16-man ODI squad despite losing the captaincy, which suggests the selectors value his batting contribution while deciding Kusal Mendis is the right person to lead the side forward.

The T20I situation is slightly different, Shanaka, who captained Sri Lanka through the recent T20 World Cup where the side failed to make the knockouts, keeps his place in the T20I squad but without the armband. His experience remains valued even as the leadership moves on.

The tour represents a significant opportunity for Kusal Mendis to establish himself in the captaincy role ahead of a busy international calendar, and with Kamindu Mendis beside him as vice-captain Sri Lanka have two of their most important cricketers sharing the leadership responsibilities in the white-ball formats.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s return is the other major story

Wanindu Hasaranga has been named in both the ODI and T20I squads, his first return to competitive cricket since tearing his left hamstring early in the T20 World Cup in February. The injury kept him off the field throughout the tournament and ruled him out of the IPL entirely, missing his season with Lucknow Super Giants as a result.

His return to the squad for the West Indies tour is significant for Sri Lanka’s bowling attack across both formats, Hasaranga at his best is one of the most dangerous wrist-spin options in white-ball cricket and his presence transforms what Sri Lanka can do in the middle overs of any match.

What the Sri Lanka squads look like

The ODI squad of sixteen is built around Kusal Mendis leading a batting group that includes Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage, with the bowling attack carrying genuine depth through Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando and Pramod Madushan.
