The IPL 2026 playoffs begin in the mountains on Tuesday and the setting could not be more dramatic. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, defending champions and league-stage table-toppers, face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala with a direct place in the May 31 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on the line.
Both teams finished the league stage on 18 points from 14 matches, RCB claiming the top spot by virtue of a superior net run rate and both have been arguably the two most complete sides of IPL 2026.
The winner goes straight to the final. The loser gets one more chance through Qualifier 2 on May 29.RCB under Rajat Patidar have built their campaign on aggressive batting led by Virat Kohli and a considerably more reliable bowling unit than in previous seasons Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Purple Cap campaign and Josh Hazlewood’s disciplined lengths have given them a bowling identity that was missing in their title-winning 2025 run.
Gujarat Titans on the other hand have been the season’s most disciplined bowling outfit, with Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj creating problems at the top and Rashid Khan providing the middle-overs control that makes their attack so difficult to score against consistently.
A win for RCB sends them to Ahmedabad to prepare for the final with six days’ rest. A win for GT does the same. Dharamsala with the mountains watching over every delivery is not an ordinary venue for an ordinary playoff game.
