Chennai Super Kings have failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third consecutive season and the question of whether Ruturaj Gaikwad continues as captain heading into IPL 2027 is the most pressing decision the franchise faces this off-season.
CSK’s IPL 2026 campaign ended with an 89-run defeat to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, the heaviest loss in the franchise’s history, which was as brutal a final statement as any season could produce.
Six wins from 14 matches and 12 points was not enough and the franchise that made 10 consecutive playoff appearances now finds itself in unfamiliar territory for the third year in a row. CEO Kasi Viswanathan has addressed the captaincy question and his answer tells you exactly where the franchise stands on Gaikwad.Speaking to Rev Sportz, Kasi Viswanathan did not hint at a change and did not distance the franchise from Gaikwad. His words were supportive and deliberate. “Ruturaj took over from MS after having watched him for three to four years.
MS and Fleming have developed Ruturaj into a very calm captain. I am sure that in the years to come he will also imbibe that quality in some of the cricketers who come in to play for CSK.”“CSK as a franchise has always maintained a culture that we expect the players to follow. Cricket is the main aim for us and the process we set along with the dedication shown towards team unity is what matters most.” Kasi further added.
That framing places Gaikwad’s development as a captain within the long-term CSK culture rather than measuring it purely by short-term results.
It is not the language of a franchise preparing to make a change.Numbers from IPL 2026 make for difficult reading. Gaikwad scored 337 runs this season at a strike rate of 123.44, the lowest of any regular opener in the competition. He became the first captain-opener in IPL history to face more than 20 balls without hitting a boundary in a single innings.
He is the fourth player to captain CSK and the first after MS Dhoni to do so for more than 30 matches. Across 33 games as captain he has won 14 and not reached a single playoff.
The tactical decisions have also been questioned at various points through the season. The case for keeping him is the one Kasi Viswanathan is making implicitly. Gaikwad inherited an exceptionally difficult role at an exceptionally difficult time. He took over from arguably the most iconic captain in franchise cricket history. He has led a transitioning squad through injury problems including the loss of Ayush Mhatre mid-season and Nathan Ellis before the tournament began.
Super Kings missed the playoffs in his first season but won the title in 2025 under Rajat Patidar which came after CSK had traded away several senior players.
The two seasons CSK qualified during their recent decline both ended with IPL titles which suggests the franchise values patience over panic.
