Delhi: Among some of the new issues that started being discussed during IPL 2026, the most talked about at the moment is the creation of Bihar’s own separate IPL team. What actually happened was that not only Ishan Kishan became the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad at the beginning of the season, he is also scoring a lot of runs and on the other hand, Vaibhav Suryavanshi proved that he is going ahead of IPL 2025 also.
Other such players also shone who are connected to the land of Bihar/Jharkhand.Suddenly Bihar has emerged as one of the new nurseries of Indian cricket and that too without any big academy, without any big name coach and without a big stadium. The story of infrastructure is definitely changing but even before that new talent has started knocking. The Rs 1,000 crore state-of-the-art Rajgir International Cricket Stadium is ready. In Bihar, selling land is considered the last option but from there, stories of selling land for son’s cricket coaching are coming to the fore.
Due to this, the issue arose that if so much talent is available then Bihar should form its own IPL team. When the structure of IPL was decided, there was mention of ‘catchment area’ to give opportunity to local talent, but that policy was flouted by all the teams and every team opened its doors to the talent, without considering where he is from. Therefore, before this discussion of Bihar team, there is no such team which can be called pure team of any one state. There is no indication that this discussion on Bihar is being paid attention to in BCCI.
In fact, this discussion is more a proof of the cricket talent present in Bihar/Jharkhand. Now, from this land, not only the youth going for allied services, but also cricketers are coming forward. This issue gained even more prominence when famous industrialist Anil Agarwal supported the Bihar IPL franchise. He is the chairman of Vedanta Group and says Bihar deserves its IPL recognition as the state is producing high-profile cricket talent in the domestic and franchise game. He raised the issue of greater recognition and investment in the state’s cricket ecosystem.
This is a direct indication of the boost to Bihar’s cricket identity with the emergence of many players from the region including Ishan Kishan, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Saqib Hussain in the current IPL season.Media from all over the world are writing about Suryavanshi. Ishan Kishan was also made the captain of the IPL team and is one of the most successful batsmen of the season. Ishan Kishan is also playing international cricket for India and has also scored the fastest ODI International 200 as per ball count. Samastipur’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Mukesh Kumar (Delhi Capitals), and Saqib Hussain (Kolkata Knight Riders) are among the most talked-about youngsters this season.
In this season, more than 11 such players played who were born in Bihar or whose family is connected to the land here.If Anil Agarwal promised to support this idea with his financial power, then Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is ready to provide government support for it. Bihar’s new Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh (who herself is a top international athlete and Commonwealth Games gold-medallist shooter) also supported this idea. Working hard on the rapidly changing sports ecosystem in the state is one of the priorities of the state government.
The introduction of Bihar Cricket League in the state also contributed to the cricket revolution and teams named Darbhanga Diamonds, Patna Pilots, Angika Avengers, Bhagalpur Bulls and Gaya Gladiators provided an essential starting platform to bring out new talent. Right now these leagues are not playing regularly but the way the environment is changing, this league will also get a lifeline.
By the way, if we start a discussion today about forming an IPL team with players from the land of Bihar, then who can come in this team:
Ishan Kishan (Sunrisers Hyderabad): Born in Patna
Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Rajasthan Royals): Everyone knows about this talent from Samastipur.
Prithvi Shaw (Delhi Capitals): Shaw’s family is originally from Gaya, Bihar.
Kumar Kushagra (Gujarat Titans): Born in Bokaro
Anukul Roy (Kolkata Knight Riders): Born in Seraikela Kharsawan
Sarthak Ranjan (Kolkata Knight Riders): Family is from Madhepura
Akash Deep (Kolkata Knight Riders): Born in Dehri, Rohtas
Mukesh Kumar (Delhi Capitals): Born in Gopalganj
Mayank Yadav (Lucknow Supergiants): Family is from Supaul
Sushant Mishra (Rajasthan Royals): Born in Ranchi
Saqib Hussain (Sunrisers Hyderabad): Born in Gopalganj
Mohammad Izhar (Mumbai Indians): Born in Birpur, Supaul
Bipin Saurabh: Although unsold till now
By the time Bihar-Jharkhand’s dream of forming its own IPL team comes true, many more names would have come forward.
