Former Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to make it to the playoffs for a third season in a row. The focus, though, was whether MS Dhoni would continue playing and be part of the 2027 season.

The franchise’s CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, has thrown the ball in the veteran icon’s court about his playing future.

Speaking to RevSportz, Mr Viswanathan was asked about Dhoni’s future, to which he said, “There haven’t been any discussions about MSD as of now. He takes his own decisions, and we respect that. The franchise wants to have MS as a regular fixture, it could be as a player, or even as a coach or mentor. It is up to him, whatever he likes, but the decision is entirely on him.”

The 44-year-old missed the entire season of the IPL for the first time in his legendary career due to injuries. Former India skipper has on several occasions stated his desire to have his final IPL game in front of the fans at the Chepauk stadium. When the iconic number 7 stepped onto the field during the team photo recently, the fans were seen cheering their favourite Thala.

Super Kings’ CEO was also asked about the role the team’s former skipper played in the transition role.

To which he replied, “Gaikwad took the leadership role from MSD after closely observing from close quarters for a few years. We are confident that those qualities will be seen in the next few years.”

One major call that the five-time champions have to make is regarding Stephen Fleming as the coach of the side.

The 53-year-old was non-committal regarding his future with the side at the end of the season. Fleming has been coaching the side since 2009 and has enjoyed a long stint with the side.

With the side failing to qualify for the playoffs yet again, there have been several questions about the Kiwis’ role in the dugout. There will be massive decisions taken ahead of the IPL 2027 with the aim of winning the sixth title.
