Lucknow Super Giants have entered full reset mode after finishing last in IPL 2026, and the first major move has now arrived. Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of the captaincy, and the franchise has accepted his request with immediate effect. It brings a sharp end to a difficult leadership chapter that began with a record Rs 27 crore auction signing but ended with LSG at the bottom of the table with just four wins from 14 matches.
Meanwhile as per another report from RevSportz report, Kane Williamson could now be set for a bigger role at the franchise, while head coach Justin Langer’s position is also under scrutiny after a season that never found rhythm.
LSG confirmed Pant’s captaincy exit through a formal statement, with Director of Cricket Tom Moody saying the franchise had accepted the wicketkeeper-batter’s request.
‘Rishabh approached the franchisee with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective – rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,’ Moody said.
The decision comes after a poor IPL 2026 campaign in which LSG finished tenth with eight points, winning only four matches and losing ten. The franchise had reshaped its squad around Pant, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh, but the team struggled for balance, bowling control and tactical clarity.
Rishabh Pant’s own season was underwhelming. He scored 312 runs from 13 innings at an average of 28.36 and a strike rate of 138.05, with only one half-century. He did have moments, including a 68 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and a 32 off 10 balls against RCB, but never looked fully settled as the team’s batting leader.
As per RevSportz, Kane Williamson could be handed a larger responsibility at LSG going forward. The former New Zealand captain joined the franchise as strategic advisor before IPL 2026, and his leadership pedigree, calm tactical mind and respect within dressing rooms make him an attractive option if the franchise reshapes its cricket structure.
When Williamson was appointed, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka had praised his “leadership, strategic insight, deep understanding of the game, and ability to inspire players,” calling him an invaluable addition.
LSG also have Tom Moody as Global Director of Cricket, but the report suggests Williamson’s age profile, recent playing experience and dressing-room credibility could make him central to the next phase.
Head coach Justin Langer is reportedly on a slippery slope after the last-place finish. LSG had already finished seventh in IPL 2025, and while the franchise changed parts of the coaching staff after that season, Langer and fast-bowling coach Bharat Arun were retained.
Arun’s work still has positives attached to it, especially with the development of Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav. Prince finished as LSG’s standout bowler in IPL 2026 with 16 wickets and earned a maiden India ODI call-up for the Afghanistan series.
There are several media reports that Pant and owner Sanjiv Goenka are not at odds. Any decision on Pant’s future as a player or leader will be taken as a cricketing call rather than a personal one.
That matters because there has been outside speculation around their equation, especially after LSG’s poor season. But the franchise appears to be approaching the matter as part of a wider review.
Moody had already hinted after LSG’s defeat to Punjab Kings that the franchise would consider a leadership reset.
‘From a captaincy point of view, he has found it challenging, obviously, and the results reflect that,’ Moody said. ‘And you do have to wonder whether that is a pressure that is reflected with his performance with the bat.’
He added that LSG would reflect across departments. ‘We will be making some considered decisions, but it certainly looks like that we are needing to consider a reset.’
For LSG, the offseason now becomes critical. Marsh and Josh Inglis were major batting positives, Prince Yadav emerged as a bowling find, and Mohsin Khan’s progress remains encouraging. But the expensive core did not deliver enough, and the leadership structure clearly needs rethinking.
Pant stepping down is the first big move. Williamson’s possible elevation could be the next. For a franchise that spent heavily to build a new identity, IPL 2027 now has to be about more than star names. It has to be about role clarity, calmer decision-making and a leadership group that can turn money into results.
