Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rise has moved from IPL fairytale to national selection conversation. After a record-breaking IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals, the 15-year-old has been included in the BCCI’s 30-member men’s longlist for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
The list, submitted to the Indian Olympic Association, does not include current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav or India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill. With the Asian Games cricket event clashing with India’s home white-ball series against West Indies, the selectors are preparing a wider pool and may eventually split players across two different squads.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the biggest story in the longlist. The Rajasthan Royals opener produced one of the most astonishing IPL seasons ever, scoring 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 238.00.
He hit 63 fours and 72 sixes, breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for most sixes in a single IPL season. His 97 off just 29 balls in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad became one of the defining knocks of the tournament.
For a 15-year-old to force his way into a senior national longlist is extraordinary, but Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s IPL impact made it almost impossible to ignore him. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not just a prospect being protected for the future; he was one of the most destructive batters of the season and a major reason RR reached the playoffs and finished third.
Suryakumar Yadav’s absence is the more striking call because he is India’s current T20I captain. However, his IPL 2026 form was well below his usual standards. Playing for Mumbai Indians, he scored 270 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.77 and a strike rate of 147.54. His highest score was 60 against RR, and he managed only two half-centuries.
His omission suggests India are looking beyond him while planning for the next T20 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics cycle.
Shubman Gill’s absence from Asian Games has a different explanation. India’s home series against West Indies overlaps with the Asian Games. That series includes three ODIs and five T20Is between September 27 and October 17, while the Asian Games men’s cricket event runs from September 24 to October 3. Since Gill is expected to lead India in the ODIs, he has not been included in the Asian Games longlist.
The BCCI is therefore expected to pick two separate T20 groups, with some senior players staying back for the West Indies series and others traveling for the Asian Games.
With Suryakumar and Gill missing, the Asian Games captaincy race could involve Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma. Tilak has already been trusted with India A leadership, while Samson brings wicketkeeping and senior T20 experience. Shreyas offers tactical maturity and leadership pedigree.
Jasprit Bumrah has been included in the longlist, though his final availability may depend on ODI workload planning ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Harshit Rana is expected to be fit by then and has also been named, along with Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh.
Among spinners, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Harsh Dubey have all made the list, though only two may eventually be picked for the Asian Games squad, with the others likely to be used against West Indies.
