Cricketing developments are coming thick and fast as soon as the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) ended. Dainik Jagran put out a massive report that Shreyas Iyer is all set to become the new captain of the Indian T20I side. The 31-year-old is set to replace Suryakumar Yadavwho had just won India their third T20 World Cup a few months ago.

In further developments, Axar Patelwho was the vice-captain of the side, is also going to be replaced. As per the same reports, Tilak Varma is the hot favourite to become the new vice-captain. The left-handed batter is set to lead India A in the Tri-Series in Sri Lanka, which also features Afghanistan A side.

Iyer, who leads Punjab Kings in the IPL, has built a fair bit of credibility with his leadership skills. He first led Delhi Capitals to the league finals in 2020, and then led Kolkata Knight Riders to their long-awaited title win in 2024. The right-handed batter also oversaw Punjab’s run to the finals in 2025, ultimately losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

This year, the team from Punjab started well with six wins out of seven before seeing their season disintegrate and lose out on the playoff spot. Coach Ricky Ponting had named the batter as the leading candidate to captain the Men in Blue in the shortest format during the season.

Indian team is set to be selected soon

With the Afghanistan series set to begin soon, the next focus will be on selecting the team for the UK tour. Men in Blue play two T20I games in Ireland towards the end of June, followed by five 20-over games in England and three ODI matches. It will be interesting to see if Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is given a call-up to the side for the tour.

There have been massive calls from some of the biggest names in the sport to give the 15-year-old the national call-up post the IPL season. Southpaw scored 776 runs with the bat and also hit the most sixes by any batter in the history of the league. The selectors could also give a call-up to the league’s best performers for the massive tour. Shreyas Iyer to be named Indian T20I captain.
