Test captain Ben Stokes has warned that star players like Jofra Archer could quit international cricket if England takes a strong stance against players competing in franchise tournaments. This comes after the fast bowler's unavailability for the first Test against New Zealand following his stint in the 2026 Indian Premier League with the Rajasthan Royals.
Archer played 16 matches in the tournament, taking 25 wickets along the way to guide his side to Qualifier 2, where they lost to the Gujarat Titans. After a few gruelling months, during which he first played in the T20 World Cup and then in the IPL, the 31-year-old has returned to his home country of Barbados for a little break, which will see him miss at least the first Test against the Black Caps.
Stokes believes that in these changing times in cricket, it is vital for cricketing boards to strike a balance between players' availability for international cricket and playing in franchise leagues. The skipper assured that Archer enjoys representing England across formats and that missing one game does not diminish his commitment.
"In an ideal situation, it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you want available at every single opportunity. That is not the way of cricket at the moment. There is a situation where it could get messy and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it in a different way, and that is not good for anyone. Jofra has shown that he's committed and loves playing for England. Just because he's not available for this first Test match does not change that," Ben Stokes was quoted as saying on BBC Sport.
It is worth noting that there are still question marks over Archer's availability for the second Test match. Head Coach Brendon McCullum stated that the management will assess his fitness before making an official decision to include him in the squad or not.
In the absence of the fast bowler, England's new-look bowling attack would be led by the returning Ollie Robinson. The Sussex captain, who last represented his country in 2024, makes a comeback to the national setup after taking 18 wickets in six matches in the County Championship. The 32-year-old has also shown his prowess with the bat this season, scoring 313 runs, including an unbeaten century against Surrey at the Oval.
Robinson has an excellent record in Test cricket. In his 20 appearances, the right-arm pace bowler has taken 76 wickets at an average of 22.92.
