With reports suggesting that the BCCI will sack Suryakumar Yadav from leadership duties, several players have been considered as top contenders in India’s T20I Captaincy Race.
According to reports, the BCCI selectors are disappointed with Suryakumar Yadav’s poor run with batting for almost two years and are most likely to remove him as India’s T20I skipper.
The BCCI council will meet on Thursday, where the decision to remove Suryakumar Yadav will be officially conveyed. With India set for back-to-back T20I series against Ireland and England, Suryakumar Yadav may not be picked for the two series at all. He has also been informed that he will not be considered for selection in future series.
However, current vice captain Axar Patel will also be ignored for the captaincy roles. According to reports, there are two contenders in India’s T20I captaincy race. Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma are strong contenders for the T20I captain.
However, some reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer, who is the only captain in IPL to lead three teams to an IPL final, is heavily considered for the captaincy role while Tilak Varma is considered for vice captain role.
Meanwhile, selectors were not convinced by Sanju Samson for captaincy due to inconsistency in his batting. Despite playing three important knocks in the T20 World Cup 2026, helping the side to help India to win their third title, his inconsistencies led selectors not to appoint him as captain.
Meanwhile, there are no discussions on Rajat Patidar, who led RCB to back-to-back titles.
Suryakumar Yadav has been in a poor run for a long period, and considering his form, the selectors have decided to move him from the captaincy.Suryakumar Yadav was India’s no.4 batter in the T20I squad, and Shreyas Iyer will be perfect for the position.
Shreyas Iyer has led KKR to their third title in the IPL 2024 season, and is associated with Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, where he led the side to the finals.
Despite Punjab Kings failing to qualify for the playoffs, Shreyas Iyer scored 498 runs in 14 games with a strike rate of 168.81 and scored one century and five fifties.
It will interesting to see who will be leading India in the future and what will be impact on this massive transistion.
