Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced the Indian T20 team for the Asian Games including the tour of Ireland and England. The captaincy has been taken away from Suryakumar Yadav. Also he has been dropped from the team. Shreyas Iyer was made the captain in his place. After which now Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has told why the decision has been taken to remove Surya from the captaincy.
Surya has an excellent record as a captain. Under the captaincy of Surya, India has won 42 out of 52 matches. At the same time, India also won the T20 World Cup 2026 under the captaincy of Surya. Despite this, he has been removed from the captaincy. Chief selector Agarkar said that Surya was dropped due to his recent form and to make the team for the future.
Agarkar said in the press conference, “It was not easy to take a decision in the case of Suryakumar Yadav, especially when he has recently won the World Cup. But often after the World Cup, the team assesses what would be the best way to move forward. His current form was also a factor in this and the World Cup cycle of more than the next two years was also kept in mind. We felt that this was the right decision for the team. As I said earlier, Shreyas fully deserves the captaincy.”
Surya was made the captain of the Indian T20 team in the year 2024. Since then there has been a huge decline in his performance. Surya has been able to score only 932 runs in 42 innings under his captaincy. During this period his average has been only 25.88. Only six half-centuries came from Surya’s bat. Under the captaincy of Surya, the Indian team won the T20 World Cup in the year 2026. But Surya disappointed a lot in the tournament. Surya scored only 242 runs. Surya could score only one half-century in the entire World Cup.
