That hush before the ball leaves the bowler’s hand. A new cap feels heavier than most expect. His initial overs moved like practice, almost too smooth. Then came that breakthrough delivery, sharp and sudden. Most remember their debut through nerves, but he settled into quiet certainty.

A young spinner from Rajasthan, only 23, stepped into international cricket like few ever have. In his first Test match, played in New Chandigarh against Afghanistan, he delivered magic – six wickets for just 33 runs. That performance crushed the opposition innings at 152. Suddenly, he stood tall beside India’s most memorable newcomers.

From the moment they gave him the ball, Manav Suthar seemed right at home. Most newcomers fumble through early tests just hoping to adjust.

A dream beginning for Manav Suthar

Out came Afghanistan’s batters, met by a mountain of runs left behind after India closed at 564 for eight. Hardly anyone expected it – but the freshest face in India’s pace lineup ended up stealing the spotlight.

Right after lunch, skipper Shubman Gill brought Suthar on the attack – four balls later, he had his first Test wicket. Malik went for a sweep, misjudged it completely; the ball popped up straight to a fielder nearby.
Just when it seemed like things could not get better, Suthar began finding his rhythm.

The left-arm spinner kept pressing Afghanistan’s batters – sharp spin biting at every turn. Not just control, but an unshaken calm shaped each delivery. With slight changes in pace tucked between consistent spots on the pitch, errors crept into their play. Wickets weren’t chased; they arrived through patience, one mistake at a time.

He’d taken three wickets by day’s end, giving up just 21 runs across nearly sixteen overs. What stood out was how tightly he held the game in his grasp.

Manav Suthar is joining an elite Indian Club

Manav Suthar’s final numbers: 6 wickets for just 33 runs. That performance slipped him into rare company within Indian cricket circles.
A few have reached this mark, yet he stands among them now, one of ten Indians ever to take five wickets in an innings when first playing Tests.

Names like Nissar appear beside him, along with Abid Ali, Doshi, Ashwin, Shami, and Patel, each arriving at the same start in their own time.

Only a few bowlers have ever grabbed five wickets on debut in Tests. This feat stands out just as much around the world as it does in India. In close to 150 years of playing this format, such moments remain scattered and brief.
India’s deep roots in spin bowling shine through once again. Among the ten Indians who’ve reached this mark, seven have sent down spin – a pattern Suthar now follows without fuss.

Second only to Narendra Hirwani

Beyond the flash of a first match five-wicket haul, Suthar’s outing meant something weightier.

Now ranking second among India’s best bowling performances on Test debut, his 6/33 trails just behind Narendra Hirwani’s famous 8/61 – a mark set long ago in Chennai when he faced the West Indies back in 1988. Just that fact nudges Suthar into rare circles.

Most striking wasn’t just how many times he took a wicket, but how each one unfolded. Batsmen from Afghanistan couldn’t quite pick his changes in pace, saw few openings to score, while often stepping into setups built slowly, deliberately. His calm control carved gaps where others saw none.

Out of calm comes precision, then mastery; each piece fits only after long seasons abroad. A steady hand shapes what practice slowly teaches.
