Deepti Sharma Shines as India Crushes Pakistan in T20 World Cup Opener
Cream rises to the top on big occasions, and that certainty rang true during India's victory over Pakistan at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, as star all-rounder Deepti Sharma delivered a superb individual performance for her country.
Record-Breaking Bowling Heroics
Deepti proved the difference between the two sides at Edgbaston, powering India to an impressive 64-run triumph over their arch-rivals. The 28-year-old registered the best bowling figures of her T20I career: a stunning 5/10 from four overs.
It was the best bowling effort by any Indian player in Women's T20 World Cup history and the third-best figures overall at any edition of the tournament.
Deepti mixed her pace with great skill to bamboozle the Pakistan batters and seal victory for her side.
Carrying Form from the 50-Over World Cup Final
Deepti's heroics come on the back of her five-wicket haul in last year's ICC Women's Cricket World Cup final against South Africa, a performance that helped deliver India their maiden 50-over World Cup title on home soil.
The performance shows how adaptable Deepti is when her side needs her most.
"I think I like the pressure conditions and ICC tournaments," Deepti said after the match. "I feel I have started again from where I finished last year's 50-over World Cup, so it feels good. I'm focusing on my process, the same things I do in practice, I am applying in matches."
Team Effort Behind the Win
Deepti wasn't the only Indian player to shine. Opener Smriti Mandhana scored 68 as India posted a solid 170/6, while Shree Charani took 3/21 to put the clamps on Pakistan's batters.
While Deepti won the Aramco Player of the Match award, she credited the entire team: "Our intent was quite good, and everyone is in very good shape.
We are very confident. We got that confidence from last year's World Cup. We are not taking it as pressure, we just want to play our best cricket in every match."We are very confident.
