Delhi: In the Group-B match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 being played at the Rose Bowl ground in Southampton, the England women’s team won the toss and decided to bowl first and completely proved their decision right. England’s disciplined bowling attack limited Ireland women’s team to a score of 118 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs.
The Irish team, who came to bat first, suffered initial setbacks rapidly.
Wicketkeeper batsman Amy Hunter returned to the pavilion after scoring only 6 runs, while captain Gabby Lewis was out without opening the account. The team came under pressure due to the fall of early wickets and the run rate was also affected. In the middle order, Orla Prendergast tried to control the innings by playing some excellent shots. He scored 26 runs in 18 balls and also hit four fours. Alana Dalzell also contributed 14 runs, but both the batsmen could not convert the big partnership into a long innings.
The team had high expectations from Rebecca Stokell, Leah Paul and Alice Tector, but all three batsmen were out after playing short innings. Due to wickets falling at regular intervals, the Irish team could not gain a strong position in the match and the dominance of England’s bowlers continued.
When the team appeared to be in trouble, Lewis Little batted brilliantly in the lower order.
Facing 15 balls, he scored unbeaten 26 runs and hit five fours. Thanks to his brilliant innings, Ireland was successful in crossing the 100-run mark and reaching 118 runs. Along with him, Amy Maguire remained unbeaten after scoring 1 run.Sophie Ecclestone was the most successful bowler for England. He took three wickets for 22 runs in four overs. Charlie Dean and Daniel Gibson took two wickets each, while Lauren Bell and Linsey Smith got one wicket each.
After the end of the first innings, England women’s team will have to score 119 runs in 20 overs to register victory.
Given the strong batting order, England is considered a strong contender to chase this target.
