Delhi: During the second ODI against Afghanistan played in Lucknow, the white cloth wrapped around the neck of Indian captain Shubman Gill became a topic of discussion among cricket lovers. Many people considered it to be a problem to injury, while some considered it a new trend. However, the real reason for this was something else. Actually, it is a special cold towel, which is soaked in ice or cold water and placed on the neck of the players, so that the body can get relief amidst the scorching heat.
There is also a scientific reason behind this technique. There are large blood vessels on both sides of the neck, which supply blood directly to the brain. When the cold towel comes in contact with these blood vessels, the blood passing through it gets cooled and then spreads throughout the body, helping to regulate the body’s internal temperature. This makes players feel fresh, reduces fatigue and also reduces the risk of problems caused by excessive heat.
During the match at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, the temperature was around 40 degrees Celsius, while there was very little wind. In such weather, batting, fielding and running for a long time becomes a big challenge for the players. This was the reason why Shubman Gill was seen using this cold towel again and again. Not only Gill, but other players, support staff and umpires were also seen resorting to this measure. In modern cricket, it is not an ordinary towel but has become an important means to protect the players from sunstroke, dehydration and extreme heat.
