Saracens Rugby Club has absolved its player Totoa Auvaa of wrongdoing and will not take action against him after a reported altercation with England's Gus Atkinson at a nightclub after the first Test at Lord's against New Zealand.

Atkinson and skipper Ben Stokes reportedly broke curfew after the Three Lions' 115-run win, being present at a nightclub in London on the late hours of June 7. It was during this episode that Auvaa was involved in a scrap with Atkinson and reportedly punched an ECB security guard.

The incident saw Stokes and Atkinson miss the second Test at the Oval, with both players being handed written warnings after the ECB internal investigation, having reportedly breached their ECB contract regulations. The Cricket Regulator, an independent body, confirmed on Monday, June 22, said about the incident that there was 'insufficient evidence to establish that any regulatory breach occurred.' The ECB also further put out a statement confirming that Stokes was not part of the altercation, while Atkinson suffered 'unprovoked attacks' from the rugby player.

"Stokes was not involved in the altercation and did not witness either incident. The evidence the ECB has seen demonstrates that Atkinson was the victim of unprovoked attacks and did not retaliate," the ECB said in a statement, as reported by cricinfo.

Saracens Rugby Club criticised the ECB's handling of the situation, which failed to seek the club's input before concluding its investigation. They further stated that they would not take any action against Auvaa.

"Saracens Rugby Club has concluded its review of the incident involving one of its Academy players and England cricketers. Saracens is satisfied that its independent review was conducted thoroughly and in accordance with the club's internal procedures and standards. The ECB contacted the club as part of its review process. Saracens made clear that it wished to complete its own internal investigation before reaching any conclusions. The ECB subsequently concluded its process and issued its statement without any input from Saracens," a club spokesperson said in a statement on The Guardian, as reported by the aforementioned source.

"Whilst the events that occurred in the early hours of Monday 8 June are regrettable for all parties involved, the club remains supportive of the player concerned. Having thoroughly reviewed the matter, the club has concluded that no further action is required and now considers the matter closed," the statement added.

Both Stokes and Atkinson are currently in action for England in the third Test against the Black Caps at Trent Bridge, having returned to the squad after missing the game at the Oval.
