Now comes word for cricket lovers worldwide – most of all in India – that the path towards LA 2028 is set, ready to unfold in full view. What lies ahead feels electric, shaped by quiet momentum building behind the scenes.
After the IOC gave the green light to cricket’s governing body, a clear path emerged for the sport’s comeback at the Olympics. Not just any event – it’ll be a tightly packed lineup: only six teams per gender allowed. Every spot in Los Angeles 2028 will come down to razor-thin margins.

Only six teams for each gender will play, keeping things tight and intense. The IOC set that limit to sharpen the competition. Each team can bring fifteen players into the mix. That adds up to ninety men and ninety women who get to take part. Numbers stay small on purpose, making every match matter more.
Out front, the selection process leans on worldwide performance instead of wide-ranging local trials. This is what the numbers show for the men’s event as well as the women’s:
Right now, being a fan of Indian cricket means having plenty to cheer about. Thanks to rules that tilt toward powerhouses on the continent, India stands ready to claim nearly every spot available across Asia – in both divisions.
It turns out the Indian women’s team is practically through. Thanks to where they finished in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 qualifying path, nations like Australia from Oceania, Great Britain across Europe, South Africa representing Africa, along with India standing for Asia, now hold automatic places as top finishers on each continent. That secured spot for the Olympics? It quietly eases the sting left by their sudden drop at the last global tournament.
The Wildcards: Qualifiers and Host Hurdles
Even if top teams fail to rank first on their continent, chances remain. Following that setback, eight other strong squads meet in what they call the Final Olympic Global Qualification Tournament. This contest allows just one path forward – victory means everything here. Whichever team lifts the trophy takes the last open berth. Nothing less than winning secures the prize.
Surprisingly, simply organizing the event won’t secure a spot for the United States. Their entry hinges on performance, nothing more. If either the US men’s or women’s team cracks the top 15 in ICC T20I standings – anytime from mid-2026 through year-end – they earn inclusion. Without that milestone, home advantage means little.
The qualification cycle is already set in motion. Here are the crucial milestones every fan should mark on their calendar as the journey to LA28 unfolds:
