Indian opener Abhishek Sharma entered the record books when he became the fifth Indian batter to complete 100 sixes in T20I. The southpaw achieved the feat in the IND vs ENG first T20I of the five-match series. He opened the innings with Sanju Samson, who was once again disappointing with the bat, amassing just 1 off 7 balls to register his third consecutive failure. Ishan Kishan was run out due to a horrible mix-up with Abhishek, with the Men in Blue struggling at 6 for 2.
It didn’t impact Abhishek, who started targeting the bowlers and took the score to 61 for 2 in 6 overs. He scored 59 runs off 24 balls, including 6 fours and 4 sixes and joined the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli.
Rohit Sharma – 205
Suryakumar Yadav – 179
Hardik Pandya – 126
Virat Kohli 124
Abhishek Sharma – 102*
Abhishek hasn’t been at his best for some time in international cricket. He was below par in the 2026 T20 World Cup at home and then registered a duck in the second game of the two-match series against Ireland.
A lot was riding on his shoulders in the campaign opener against the Harry Brook-led team, and the left-handed batter justified the trust shown in him by the team management.
Sam Curran broke the 82-run stand between Abhishek and Iyer when he got rid of the young Indian opener.
In 49 T20Is so far, he has amassed over 1500 runs at an average of close to 35 and a strike rate nearing 194, with the help of 2 centuries and 10 fifties.
Earlier, India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first against the English team on July 1. The sub-continent team didn’t include the 15-year-old in the Playing XI, with the skipper and the head coach, Gautam Gambhir, giving preference to Abhishek and Samson.
