When the BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, the first name that drew attention was the one missing from the list.
Sanju Samson, the uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman, is currently in England on a white-ball tour with Ireland and was considered a fringe figure to make it to the T20 squad. But Samson, who has had a checkered year with the bat, is likely to continue to be a forgotten name at the back of the T20 keeper-batter depth chart.
This is hardly surprising, given the circumstances, but it is not the only reason why he and a clutch of other players may not see much action.
The Zimbabwe series begins in four days and follows on from the ODI series in England; the players will have to contend with a tour of Sri Lanka in August.
And so, with the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020 looming ever closer, the selectors have decided to give some players a rest and blood several newcomers who may well be contemplating their futures in the T20 game.
Prabhsimran Singh
Perhaps the most surprising of all the changes was the inclusion of Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh. India have more than enough wicket-keeping options with Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma and others in the mix.
The decision to add another keeper has not been made without some hesitation because the 26-year-old had a good tournament under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy and batted regularly in the tri-series against Sri Lanka as India ‘A’, backing up his strong IPL with consistent performances.
The Punjab batter has batted in both positions 1 and 3 in his team’s innings.
Furthermore, he provides India with an alternative right-handed opening batsman, which is an area where they currently only have one option.
It seems that the selectors are thinking about the future and the flexibility of the team for the upcoming bilateral series and tournaments.
Yash Thakur
If there was no mystery surrounding Prabhsimran, Yash Thakur’s inclusion makes for a bigger story.
The Vidarbha paceman was in action just once for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2026, finishing with 2/55. It wasn’t exactly a performance that suggested he’d be a worthy successor to Jasprit Bumrah and the other fast men from Mumbai.
The selectors have clearly been looking past the IPL. Thakur was one of the best bowlers in the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, picking up 18 wickets in 7 matches.
He also shone in India ‘A’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, taking 10 wickets, including 3/45 in the tri-series final. His inclusion suggests a trend of rewarding consistency in domestic cricket over the IPL.
But what about Rasikh Salam and Kartik Tyagi? We can only hope they aren’t heartbroken at missing out on this opportunity.
Mayank Yadav
The most intriguing selection decision of all, however, remains Mayank Yadav.
The super-fast seamer was seen as one of the next stars in line to fill the void left by the legendary pacemen in the past couple of years before injuries derailed his rise.
He returned to the fray in IPL 2026, but his figures of 4 innings with no wickets and 11.38 economy did not inspire much confidence.
With hungry youngsters like Ashok Sharma, Gurnoor Brar, Kartik Tyagi, and others who can bowl at a decent pace, it was expected that the selectors would look towards youth.
They surprised almost everyone by retaining Mayank Yadav in the squad, nevertheless.
The decision is a gamble, no doubt. If he returns to his best, India will have one of the fastest bowlers in the world. But if he fails to deliver yet again, it will cost them dearly.
Viewed as a whole, the Zimbabwe squad is full of players the selection committee would rather have than those the crowd wants.
There’s workload, preparation, and the need to be ready for the upcoming challenging season. However, it is a clear sign that the Indian T20 batting order is far from being settled.
This opportunity may come once; For Prabhsimran, it is a golden chance to cement his place in the wicket-keeping department.
For Yash Thakur, it is a validation that there is no place for him in the Indian domestic circuits. But for Mayank Yadav, it is probably the last opportunity to showcase his talent to the selectors, as he might soon be forgotten in the race for the fastest Indian bowler of all time.
Zimbabwe is unlikely to be the real test for India, but the results during the three-match series will set the tone for the years to come.
