India’s euphoria of clinching the 2026 T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad appears to be fading fast. Barely five days after raising the T20 World Cup trophy, Team India is in for a rude awakening as the men in blue prepare to face their fifth match in as many days.

A winless T20I series against Ireland, followed by a shock defeat in the opening game against England, has left India staring at an embarrassing series defeat. And, with the Test series also slipping away, Gambhir has his work cut out in the upcoming T20Is.

The pressure is on Shreyas Iyer as he faces a personal dilemma at the vice-captain’s position. As India’s caravan rolled into Bristol for the fourth T20I on July 9, the world champions are in dire straits in their pursuit of a series win. The captaincy responsibilities for Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer have become a hot topic of discussion among cricket fans and analysts. The Indian team management is expected to make some crucial decisions in the upcoming matches to turn their fortunes around.

The Countdown on Tilak Varma

While it is fair to say the entire Indian batting unit has struggled to cope with the English conditions, one name stands out for all the wrong reasons. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan have had their moments, Shreyas Iyer has added valuable runs, and 15-year-old wonder Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been a rollercoaster of a prospect, but patience is a virtue, especially for a teenager.

However, the same cannot be said about Tilak Varma.

Unlike his younger counterpart, Tilak Varma did not come to England on a learning tour. The Mumbai Indians star batted regularly in the tri-series against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A, where he led India A to a successful campaign. Still, a closer look at the numbers will reveal that Tilak was already struggling before the tour began. His 275 runs in 5 matches in Sri Lanka were scored at a poor strike rate of 74.93.

And it seems that Tilak Varma’s issues have followed him across the sea. In 5 matches, he could manage only 114 runs, and more importantly, only 114 runs. His strike rate in England is 111.76, which is lower than his run total.

Tilak Varma vs England: A Series in Decline

matches Score(Balls) Strike Rate
1st T20I 13 (13) 100
2nd T20I 24 (11) 218.18
3rd T20I 3 (11) 27.27
Series Tally 40 runs (3 inns) 114.29

With the top four slots secured, Tilak Varma has had to make do with number five, a position which has so far proven infertile for his game. He has been completely stifled by spin bowling, managing just 109.58 runs per 100 balls faced in T20I since 2025. The opposition captains are already targeting his game, creating conditions in which he is forced to play conservatively, and the vice-captaincy in the T20Is may as well begin to count down.

The Sanju Samson Shadow and the Bristol Blueprint

As Tilak departs, the perennial favorite to open alongside Sooryavanshi, the flamboyant Sanju Samson, stands as the next casualty on the horizon. Rajasthan Royals’ captain, in the meantime, is languishing on the sidelines as the national team turns its back on him. Gambhir needs Sanju Samson’s strike to step in for Abhishek Sharma and Sooryavanshi, who have been dazzling at the top of the order. A premature exit after two successive failures would be unfair to 15-year-old Sooryavanshi. Yet Gambrir has to respond quickly and give the wicket-keeper a chance. Samson, after all, has already faced the ire of the selectors thrice, including twice in Ireland, and now finds himself at the center of the storm again.

The Indian cricket team has a strategy to tackle the rising challenges, and they appear to have one more shot at Tilak Varma in Bristol.

For the moment, the good news is that India’s bowling strength is greater than ever. In the previous match, the coaching staff made a bold move by dropping Ravi Bishnoi in favor of Prince Yadav. The decision was justified as the attack looked far more balanced and effective. Chakaravarthy is also beginning to regain his form after his knee injury, while Arshdeep and Harshit Rana have been so consistent that Prasidh Krishna has turned into the only reliable option among the pace merchants.
