Delhi: Former wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel has said that India's senior men's cricket team does not need to look for a foreign coach and should instead rely on local talent. Patel's statement comes at a time when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the post of head coach.
Rahul Dravid's contract as the head coach of the men's team will expire after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June. The BCCI has invited applications for the post, the last date for which is May 27. Dravid is unlikely to re-apply for the post, so India has considered the names of some foreign legends, including Stephen Fleming, Tom Moody, Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer.

According to PTI, Parthiv said, “Many coaches from NCA have joined the Indian team, I don't see the need for foreign coaches. India has many capable coaches. Every second year our Under-19 team wins the World Cup, India A team performs well on foreign tours. They are coached by Indians, so why do we need external coaches? Chandrakant Pandit is a big example of this.”
For your information, let us tell you that India last got a foreign coach in the 2015 World Cup, when Team India had a very bad experience with former Australian legend Greg Chappell, but under the guidance of Gary Kirsten, India managed to win the 2011 World Cup. Since then, Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid have served as the head coach of the national team, while National Cricket Academy (NCA) director VVS Laxman has replaced Dravid during his break.
Laxman bhai used to take Rahul bhai's place
Parthiv said, “We have seen that when Rahul bhai was the coach, Laxman bhai used to take his place. However, it is not just about two coaches, there are other coaches of NCA as well.”
According to the report, BCCI has also approached Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir for the post of head coach. The board has confirmed that the tenure of the next coach will be 3.5 years, which will be extended till December 2027.
