The Chennai Super Kings’ consistent success can be attributed to their unwavering team-first philosophy. MS Dhoni deserves immense credit for cultivating this strong culture within the CSK setup over the years. The core of this approach lies in backing the right players at the right time, regardless of their reputation. Dhoni’s focus has been on extracting the best from each individual, rather than simply assembling the biggest names.
Providing insight into CSK’s approach, Dhoni explained that when they bring in a high-profile player whose style differs from the team’s, he expects that individual to adapt to the team’s needs. However, if the player fails to align with the team, CSK does not hesitate to release them, even if they are a talented cricketer. For Dhoni and CSK, the collective interests of the team always take priority.
“When we sign a talented new player, we must consider how well they will fit into our existing environment. We want this player to take a step towards the team’s goals, and we’re willing to make concessions to accommodate them. However, if that alignment isn’t possible, the next best option is to maintain our current approach without disrupting the team dynamic.” said Dhoni in a video uploaded but CSK.
“As a last resort, we may need to part ways with the player, whether in a business or sports context. Ultimately, our goal is to get the most out of each individual and ensure they become a valuable asset to the team, if their skills and personality are a good match,” he continued.
“If the individual is unwilling to take the necessary actions, then a difficult decision must be made. While letting go of a talented player can be hard, it may be the best choice for the team’s overall performance. A new player, even if not as skilled, could better fit the team’s needs and help the group succeed,” remarked the former CSK skipper.
“Adapting the entire team to cater to one individual is not an ideal long-term strategy. Sometimes the right call is to move on, even from a “greatest player,” in order to build a stronger, more cohesive unit,” opined Dhoni.
Dhoni, who has left everyone speculating about his playing days in the league, stated that fear is a necessary for improvement.
“Fear is a vital emotion that drives us to be brave and courageous. Without fear, I could never push myself to make difficult decisions or take calculated risks. The pressure that comes with fear helps me carefully weigh all factors before taking action. While some may perceive me as fearless, the truth is I embrace my fears, as they are what empower me to make the right choices and overcome challenges.”
